Die ersten 2 1/2 Wochen des August hatten sich angefühlt wie ein Marathon, den ich untrainiert mitgerannt bin. Denn der Ausstellungsaufbau für „Media Art is here“ kam so überraschend für mich wie jeder kirchliche Feiertag im Frühjahr, an dem ich, von Panik überkommen, in den vollgedrängten Supermarkt eile, um mich für die 24h ohne Kaufmöglichkeit zu preppen. So ähnlich war auch dieser Ausstellungsaufbau, viele angefangene Ideen von “FURIE” mussten in halbwegs präsentable Formen gebracht werden, sowohl mein kurz vorher erworbener Beichtstuhl für eine Installation, in dem mir Besuchende ihre Wut-Geschichten beichten können, als auch das Video, das ich 6 Tage vor Vernissage gedreht hatte. So wurde es zu einem Deadline-Rush der besonderen Art, denn hasse ich diese nicht nur eh schon (ich bin ein Planungsfreak!), sondern war ich auch noch geschwächt vom im letzten Bericht erwähnten Sommer-Event-Trubel.

Aber genau 5 min. vor Eröffnung stand alles und konnte sich sehen lassen, und schien gegen mein eigenes nicht wohlmeinendes Bauchgefühl „professionell und beeindruckend umfassend“ gewirkt zu haben. Ich habe mich an diesem Abend mit großem Interesse dem Sektausschank gewidmet und am nächsten Tag dem Ausschlafen und Nichtstun. Letzteres eine Disziplin, die mir oft eher schwerfällt, aber diesmal mit gelegentlichen Kontrollen von meinem Well-Being-Beauftragten Anton gut ausgeübt wurde.

Nun sind wir für 2 Wochen in Kanada, genauer Quebec, und starten ab Mittwoch in unseren Roadtrip als Trio: Laurence, Anton und ich. Ich erwarte eine mind. verfilmungswürdige Storyline, wie jeder andere Roadtrip-Streifen, nur mit etwas mehr Qigong, Krustentieren und romantisierten Spieleabenden.

Und natürlich, wie in jeder Podcast-Urlaubsfolge, werde auch ich noch eine Kulturbürger-Leseliste haben. Meine besteht allerdings nur aus zweien, da ich statt einer Leseratte eher eine Leseschnecke bin. Das wären dann wohl „Rage Becomes Her“ von Soraya Chemaly, welches ich für meine female Rage-Recherche seit Monaten immer wieder hernehme und einfach ein unfassbar gut zu lesendes Buch ist, das eine Passage nach der anderen raushaut, die meine innere Wut sanft aufköcheln lässt. Und es begleitet mich „Banal Nightmare“ von Halle Butler, auf das ich sehr gespannt bin und das eher besänftigende Urlaubslektüre sein soll.

Und nun wünsche ich jedem, der gerade noch in den Urlaub geflohen oder wieder zurückgekehrt ist, einen „Hot Chill Summer“. Und nun wäre eventuell ein Cosmopolitan doch angebracht. Cheers.

I’m in Montreal right now, sitting with my good friend Laurence, whom I hadn’t seen in the flesh since 2022, only digitally on various screens whenever we called once a year. It feels like that continental distance never existed, nicely normal. Homey. Exactly what I need right now, after the last few wild weeks. So here I am, Carrie Bradshaw-esque, except with a warm broth, in leggings and an oversized hoodie instead of a Cosmopolitan, a cigarette, and Manolo Blahniks, writing this Field Report No. 3.

The first two and a half weeks of August had felt like a marathon I ran completely untrained, just swept along. Because the exhibition build for “Media Art is here” caught me as off guard as every religious holiday in spring does, the kind where, overcome with panic, I rush into the packed supermarket to stock up for the 24 hours with nothing open. This exhibition build was much the same, plenty of half-started ideas from “FURIE” had to be knocked into some kind of presentable shape, both the confessional booth I’d bought shortly before for an installation where visitors can confess their rage stories to me, and the video I’d shot just 6 days before the opening. So it turned into a deadline rush of a special kind, because not only do I already hate those anyway (I’m a planning freak!), I was also worn down from the summer event whirlwind mentioned in my last report.

But exactly 5 minutes before the opening, everything was standing and looked presentable, and against my own less than kindly gut feeling, it apparently came across as “professional and impressively comprehensive.” That evening I devoted myself with great interest to the sparkling wine, and the next day to sleeping in and doing nothing. The latter a discipline that’s often hard for me, but this time practiced well thanks to occasional check-ins from my Well-Being Officer Anton.

Now we’re in Canada for 2 weeks, Quebec to be exact, and starting Wednesday we’re setting off on our road trip as a trio: Laurence, Anton, and me. I’m expecting a storyline at least movie-worthy, like every other road trip film, just with a bit more qigong, crustaceans, and romanticized game nights.

And of course, like in every vacation episode of a podcast, I too will have a reading list, cultured-citizen style. Mine consists of only two, though, since instead of being a bookworm, I’m more of a reading snail. Those would be “Rage Becomes Her” by Soraya Chemaly, which I’ve been picking up again and again for months now for my female rage research, and which is simply an incredibly readable book, throwing out one passage after another that gently brings my inner rage to a simmer. And keeping me company is “Banal Nightmare” by Halle Butler, which I’m very curious about and which is supposed to be the more soothing vacation read.

And now I wish everyone who has just fled into their vacation or just returned from one a “Hot Chill Summer.” And now a Cosmopolitan might actually be in order. Cheers.

Anfang Juli war meine gute Freundin und talentierte Performancekünstlerin Natalia Di Cosmo zu Besuch. Sie hat mir wieder genügend Italy-Energie und meinem crappy Italienisch eine Bühne geboten. Außerdem hat sie mit mir den Workshop Simmering über zwei Tage geleitet. Dort haben wir als kleine Gruppe weiblich sozialisierter Personen das Gefühl vor dem Ausbruch der Wut erforscht und in Gesten und eine Choreografie transformiert. Das war eine enorm bereichernde Erfahrung, für die ich dankbar bin. Ich kann dem Vertrauen der Teilnehmenden in uns gar nicht genug Respekt zollen. Es kam eine sehr intensive Choreografie dabei heraus. Viele Wut-Geschichten wurden mit mir geteilt. Sie haben mir das Gefühl gegeben, dass es diese Orte wirklich braucht, wo wir Wut aussprechen, fühlen und produktiv mit ihr umgehen dürfen. Diese Erfahrung hat Natalia und mich nicht nur etwas erschöpft und wütend gemacht, sondern auch extrem inspiriert. Sie ist gleich in unser gemeinsames Performanceprojekt “I can’t” eingeflossen, an dem ich parallel zu FURIE arbeite.

Neben diesem Meilenstein wurde auch ein weiterer fertig, die Fahnen-Schwenk-Maschine, liebevoll “The Relentless” genannt. Meine motorbetriebene Skulptur schwingt unaufhörlich eine Protestfahne, als Symbol für den Protest, der so lange dauert, wie es Gründe gibt, noch wütend zu sein. Sie ist nun im studio hö eingezogen und schwingt dort fröhlich vor sich hin.

Neben all den Events, die einander jagten, haben wir uns mit dem Lichtspielsauna e.V. direkt in diesen prall vollen Eventkalender eingereiht. Mit unserem jährlichen Atelierfest “Out of Order”, kuratiert von Elisabeth Potemkin, Ausstellungsdesign von Lasse Peters. Es fand am ersten Augustwochenende statt, zwei wunderschöne Tage voll besonders auditiver neuer Eindrücke, unterschiedlichster Besuchender und einer Menge veganer Bratwurst.

Kaum war das abgebaut, sind wir auch schon im August gelandet. Gerade in diesem Moment stecke ich im Aufbau für die Zwischenausstellung “Die Furien sind hier” im Rahmen des Festivals “Media Arts is here” der UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts Karlsruhe. Die Vernissage findet am 11. August um 19 Uhr im studio hö, Kaiserstraße 3, Karlsruhe, statt. Kommt gerne vorbei!

In July we weren’t just flattened by more heat waves, no, also by the annual Karlsruhe Summer. It’s an avalanche of events (+ heat) that every year eventually catches up with me, overwhelms me and leaves me pretty dazed. Right now I’m still trying to recover, somewhat out of breath.

In early July, my good friend and talented performance artist Natalia Di Cosmo was visiting. She gave me plenty of Italy energy and my crappy Italian a stage again. She also co-led the Simmering workshop with me over two days. There, as a small group of female-socialized people, we explored the feeling right before rage breaks out and transformed it into gestures and a choreography. That was an enormously enriching experience, one I’m grateful for. I can’t give enough respect to the trust the participants placed in us. A very intense choreography came out of it. Many rage stories were shared with me. They left me with the feeling that spaces like this are truly needed, spaces where we’re allowed to voice rage, feel it and deal with it productively. This experience didn’t just leave Natalia and me somewhat exhausted and angry, it also inspired us immensely. It flowed straight into our joint performance project “I can’t,” which I’m working on alongside FURIE.

Alongside this milestone, another one was completed too, the flag waving machine, affectionately named “The Relentless.” My motor driven sculpture relentlessly waves a protest flag, as a symbol for protest that lasts as long as there are reasons to still be angry. It has now moved into studio hö, where it happily keeps waving away.

Amid all the events chasing one after another, we joined Lichtspielsauna e.V. in lining up in this packed events calendar too. With our annual summer festival “Out of Order,” curated by Elisabeth Potemkin, exhibition design by Lasse Peters. It took place on the first weekend of August, two beautiful days full of especially auditory new impressions, all kinds of visitors and a lot of vegan bratwurst.

No sooner was that taken down than we landed in August. Right at this moment I’m setting up for the interim exhibition “Die Furien sind hier” (”The Furies Are Here”) as part of the “Media Arts is here” festival by the UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts Karlsruhe. The opening is on August 11 at 7pm at studio hö, Kaiserstraße 3, Karlsruhe. Come by!

Die Videoinstallation, die ich gemeinsam mit Gloria Müller entwickelt habe, ist im Rahmen der kostenfreien Ausstellung 26 Grad im ZKM Karlsruhe zu sehen — der diesjährigen Graduiertenausstellung der HfG. Wie immer kündige ich das etwas spät an. Sorry.

Vernissage: Donnerstag, 16. April, ab 18:00 Uhr ZKM Karlsruhe, Lichthof 8+9, 1. OG — Eintritt frei. Es gibt Sekt, Live-Coding-Musik und Diplomprojekte von rund 20 HfG-Absolvent*innen zu entdecken.

„It’s okay now” ist eine autofiktionale Videoinstallation von Isabelle Konrad und Gloria Müller. Die Arbeit untersucht Fragen nach Herkunft, Identität und Selbstrepräsentation durch die Praxis des Erinnerns. Archivmaterial, fiktionale Szenen und persönliche Performances verweben sich zu einer narrativen Struktur, die zwischen Realität und Fiktion oszilliert.

Ergänzend zur Installation gibt es eine interaktive Performance in Form einer Teezeremonie: Besucher*innen sind eingeladen, eigene Erinnerungen zu teilen und in eine Kette von Assoziationen einzutreten. Der Tee wird im Samowar zubereitet und gemeinsam als ritueller Akt der Verbindung und Reflexion geteilt.
